Interior Tank Cleaning With Confined-Space Entry

Most storage tank cleaning ends with someone inside the tank. A tank is a permit-required confined space, so every entry runs under a written program that follows OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146:

• Isolate and lock out. Lines are blanked or disconnected, mixers and pumps locked out, and the tank drained to its lowest point.
• Test the air. A calibrated four-gas meter checks oxygen, flammability, hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide before entry and throughout the work.
• Ventilate. Air movers run before and during entry, sized to the tank and its openings.
• Attendant and rescue. An attendant stays outside at the manway for every entry, with a retrieval system and a rescue plan in place before anyone goes in.
• Clean and remove. Hot water washing and hand tools lift scale, sludge and product film; residue is pumped or vacuumed out.
• Inspect and close out. You get photos of the clean tank, the entry permit and a written service record.

It is priced like our industrial pressure washing: from $0.62 per square foot of washed surface with a $3,500 minimum. Dikes and containment floors are washed in the same visit, and when a lining is failing we can reline it with our secondary containment coatings.

Tank Sandblasting and Surface Prep

When a tank shell needs new paint, the coating is only as good as the prep under it. Our crews sandblast tanks to SSPC standards with a towable production rig: SSPC-SP 7 brush-off from $4.00 per square foot, SSPC-SP 6 commercial blast from $5.75 on new steel and $7.25 on painted or rusted steel, plus $1,500 mobilization and spent-media disposal. SSPC-SP 10 near-white is quoted per job. Lead-bearing coatings are excluded until tested.
