Fort Smith sits on the Arkansas River at the Oklahoma border, and it is one of the few cities in
this state where heavy manufacturing is still the main event rather than a historical note. Water
heaters, electric motors, pet food, firearms and industrial equipment are all made here. The
Arkansas River navigation channel gives the city barge access, Chaffee Crossing has turned a former
Army installation into an industrial and commercial district, and Ebbing Air National Guard Base

Heavy Manufacturing: the Surfaces That Actually Fail
A plant floor and a plant yard fail in different ways, and the difference decides the method:
Equipment pads and press areas take hydraulic oil and cutting fluid that soaks
into the concrete rather than sitting on it. A cold rinse spreads it into a larger stain and leaves
the surface just as slick. This wants hot water, the right degreaser and dwell time, and the oil
has to be recovered rather than chased to a drain.
Dock aprons and trailer courts get the grinding of trailer landing gear plus
diesel and grease, which is the most abused concrete on most sites.
Structural steel, pipe racks and overhead accumulate oily dust that is both a
housekeeping finding and, in the wrong concentration over a heat source, a genuine fire-protection
concern. We extract it with HEPA vacuum from lifts rather than blowing it down onto the machines
and the floor, because blowing it down relocates the problem instead of solving it.
Coated floors under chemical attack, where the question is whether the slab can
be recoated or has to be repaired first. Moisture testing comes before any specification, and in a
plant with thermal cycling or acid exposure a novolac or urethane system outlasts standard epoxy by
a wide margin.

yard trucks and conveyors carrying caked material and grease. Two reasons that matters beyond
appearance: soil holding moisture against steel corrodes it from the outside in, and a machine
caked in material cannot be properly inspected. A pre-sale or pre-handover clean is what lets
anyone see what they are actually buying.
