What Permanent Lighting Is

Permanent outdoor lighting is a run of individually controlled LEDs mounted along the edge of your roof. Every light can change color, so one install covers every holiday, every game day and plain warm white trim lighting the rest of the year. On most systems the lights sit in a slim aluminum track that is color-matched to your trim, so in daylight it blends into the house.

The same kind of install in daylight: the track runs under the roof edge and blends into the trim.

The lights run on low voltage from a power supply and a Wi-Fi controller, usually mounted inside the garage and plugged into a regular outlet. From the app you pick colors, choose a pattern and set the lights to come on at sunset and go off at bedtime, with no monthly subscription. If you would rather have the classic look of big C9 bulbs for the season only, that is our holiday lighting installation, which starts at $600 for a front roofline and comes down in January.

The Lighting Systems We Install

Not every house needs the same system, so we install more than one kind, and your quote names the exact product before anything goes up.

Professional pixel lighting

Individually controlled full-color pixel lights, such as Minleon’s permanent line, set in a track that comes in several colors to match your trim. Models with a dedicated warm-white LED give true white trim lighting. The system runs on low voltage from a controller that plugs into a standard outlet, and you run it from the Pixel Dancer app with schedules that can follow sunset.

Permanent vs. Seasonal Christmas Lights

Both are good choices, and we install both. The difference is how often you pay for the install:

Seasonal Christmas lights Permanent lights
How long they stay up Mid-November to January All year
Colors The bulbs on the strand Any color or pattern, changed from your phone
Install Every year, plus takedown and storage Once
A 75-foot roofline $600 every season $1,500 one time
Best for The classic big-bulb Christmas look Every holiday, plus everyday trim lighting

The math is simple: on a 75-foot roofline, a permanent system at $1,500 costs less than three seasons of hired $600 installs, and it keeps working for the Fourth of July, Halloween and every night in between.

What moves the number: a second story or a steep roof (more ladder and lift time), the number of corners and peaks (each one is a cut and a connector), how far the controller sits from an outlet, and how your fascia and soffit are built. The controller, power supply and the low-voltage run to it are quoted with your layout once we have seen the roofline, so your written quote is the real number before anything goes up. Over 250 feet, we quote from the measurement.

Permanent Lights — Questions We Get

Are permanent lights worth it?
If you hire out your Christmas lights, usually yes. On a 75-foot roofline our seasonal install starts at $600 every year, while a permanent system starts at $1,500 once, which is less than three seasons of hired installs. After that the lights keep working for every holiday and as everyday trim lighting. If you only want lights for a few weeks in December and don’t mind hanging them yourself, seasonal lights cost less.
How much do permanent lights cost?
Ours start at $18 per linear foot installed for up to 100 feet of roofline, with a $1,500 minimum to start. A full roofline with the garage and entry starts at $22 per foot (from $2,500), and a whole-home system with a custom controller starts at $26 per foot (from $4,500). A second story, a steep pitch, extra corners and where your outlet is are what move the price. We measure your roofline from your address and send your estimate, and your written quote confirms the price.
How long do they last, and what is the warranty?
The LEDs in permanent lighting systems are typically rated for around 50,000 hours, and they last longest when they run in the evenings rather than all night. Warranties come in two parts: the manufacturer warrants the product, and the installer warrants the workmanship. Both depend on the system you choose, and both are written on your quote before anything is installed.
What are the downsides?
The cost is up front instead of spread over seasons. Remote control runs through an app, so it relies on your Wi-Fi. Some HOAs want to approve them first. Systems that make white by mixing red, green and blue can look slightly blue, so if warm white trim lighting matters to you, ask about systems with dedicated white LEDs. And if you replace your roof or gutters later, the track may have to come down and go back up.
How do the lights get power? Do I need an electrician?
The controller and power supply usually mount inside the garage and plug into a regular outlet, and a low-voltage wire runs from there to the roofline. If there is no outlet where the controller needs to go, adding one is work for a licensed electrician, priced separately from the lighting.
Can you see them during the day?
Barely. The track mounts under the edge of the roof and is color-matched to your trim, so in daylight it blends into the house. The daylight photo above shows the look with the lights off.
Where do they mount? What if my house has no eaves?
On most homes the lights mount on the fascia board or the underside of the soffit, not on the gutter itself. Houses with little or no overhang can usually still take permanent lights with a different mounting.
Will they hold up to Arkansas weather?
They are built to stay outside all year. Permanent lighting systems are sealed and weather-rated, most from IP65 to IP68 depending on the product, and they sit tight to the house instead of hanging from clips.
What can I do with the app?
Pick from millions of colors, use or save presets for holidays and game days, set schedules that turn the lights on at sunset and off when you choose, and dim the lights for everyday trim lighting. Some systems also work with voice assistants.
Will my HOA allow permanent lights?
Many HOAs ask for architectural approval first, so check your covenants. Permanent lights can run warm white or stay off outside the holidays, and the track is low-profile. If your HOA wants product details and photos for its review, ask and we will send them.
Why not buy a kit and put it up myself?
You can; consumer kits are sold in stores. What you pay an installer for is the ladder work, straight runs and clean corners on every peak, power planned to the right outlet, and someone to call if a section stops working. And because we work on gutters every day, we check the fascia and gutter line before anything is mounted.
Do you install permanent lights on businesses?
Yes, anywhere in Arkansas. See our commercial permanent lighting page for storefronts, dealerships, offices, churches and apartment communities.
